Chawama Constituency’s John Howard Ward 3, Councillor Kafula Mutale has affirmed commitment towards defusing the emerging gang culture in the area to ensure the safety of residents.
John Howard Ward 3 has in the recent past been infiltrated by gangs that fight each other, and in the process threaten the peace, security and tranquillity that the residents of John Howard enjoy.
Some community members have been caught up in these gang brawls where they have lost cellphones, wallets, handbags and other personal effects.
Following correspondence to the office of the area councillor, Mr Kafula Mutale, the civic leader quickly constituted a team, dubbed “John Howard Community Joint Operations Committee” (JHCJOC), to fight the scourge.
Mr Mutale has told 5fm news that this team has tirelessly worked to demobilize and dismantle the gangs in record time.
“The gang members of the dismantled gangs are being integrated into the community by way of forming cooperatives of like-minded youths so that they can do something positive to change their livelihood.
This initiative is being supervised by a youth community leader under the office of the councillor.
He says He has influence over these once wayward youths and is able to manage and shepherd them into doing some desirable things for themselves, and indeed the community at large,” he said.
Some of the gangs were called: Swaggie, Ndembo Ndembo Lion, Smackdown and Sevente.
However, it must be noted that gangs are many in other wards in Chawama hence the need for Police interventions to ensure security in the constituency cannot be overemphasized.
